Going to School Every Day Matters
Student Attendance Matters
Student attendance at school is an important, cost-effective way to ensure students are on-track to learn and succeed. As many as one in seven students are chronically absent. Chronic absence is an early warning sign of academic trouble and later dropout. Below are key messages that everyone in the community can use to help out students succeed.
Good attendance helps children do well in school and eventually helps lead to doing well in the workplace.
Students are chronically absent if they miss 10 percent or more of the school year, or about 18 days each year.
Trusting relationships with teachers, mentors, coaches or other caring adults help motivate good attendance even when it isn’t easy to get to school.
Taking a positive approach is essential to having honest conversations about what keeps students from getting to school so solutions can be put in place for now and the future.
Poor health, whether it is dental, mental or physical is a key factor with many students.. Excused absences are just as harmful to the student’s education as unexcused absences.
Educators and families need to monitor how many days each student misses for any reason so action can be taken early on.
How can the community help? Be alert to students out of school during school hours, assist with transportation to school and be a positive role model in encouraging students to get a good education.
Chronic absence is a problem we can solve when the whole community works with families and schools to keep students on track.
