In mid-January the Shingletown Medical Center (SMC) launched its involvement with the “Quality Improvement Program Peer-led Self-Management Support Group” program being sponsored by Partnership HealthPlan of California (PHC). This PHC program sponsors free-to-the-public classes focusing on health, exercise, nutrition and behavior health support groups.
The first set of classes were to go for six weeks, but with the overwhelming attendance and request from participants, SMC will have these classes continue until further notice. These fun and informative classes are held in the SMC Wellness Center located at Black Butte Elementary School in room 20.
Thursday’s – 1:30pm to 2:30pm
“Movement Matters” this class is taught by Jen Ocea, Modern Dance Teacher/ Movement Specialist. This inspiring class is designed to introduce clients suffering from stiffness and fatigue, to several styles of gentle movement. The movement is slow, controlled and meditative, enabling the client to gain strength, balance and flexibility while obtaining knowledge of body consciousness.
Thursday’s – 2:45pm to 3:45pm
“Improving your Health and Wellness through Yoga” is instructed by Kelly Bullan, SMC Case Manager. This yoga class will focus on flexibility, balance, coordination and the importance of healthy nutrition and water intake. Through these classes you will learn ways to improve your overall health and various ways to decrease stress and anxiety.
Friday’s – 11:30am – 12:30pm
“Depression and Isolation – a Journey of Hope” is instructed by Colleen Cambra, SMC Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Kelly Bullan. This is a support group and focuses on sharing strengths and gifts, challenges and circumstances, and developing ways to self-manage feelings through open discussion, relaxation techniques and group reinforcement.
With spring just around the corner, please come and join in on these fun and informative classes. SMC will also be offering additional classes such as “These Shoes Were Made for Walking” and various other nutrition based classes in the coming months. Dates and times will be announced once confirmed.
