Kick BoxingThe Shingletown Medical Center (SMC) has added new classes to their “Quality Improvement Program Peer-led Self-Management Support Group” program. This program offers free-to-the-public classes focusing on health, exercise, nutrition and behavior health support groups. These classes will be taught by Kelly Bullan, SMC Case Manager.

Tuesday’s – 9am to 10:00am
“Kickin’ it Cardio Kickboxing” classes will go from July 6th through August 9th. The class will be held in the SMC Wellness Center located at Black Butte Elementary School in room 20. This action packed, energetic and fun class requires no equipment or gloves. Cardio kickboxing is a combination of dance and martial arts, incorporating punching and kicking combinations, i.e.: Jabs, upper cuts, hooks and kicks to improve overall strength, toning, endurance, cardiovascular fitness, balance, reduce injury, stress and focus on fat loss.

Tuesday’s – 10:30am to 11:30am
“Improving your Health and Wellness through Yoga” will be offered July 6th through August 9th. This yoga class changed location for the summer months and will be held in the Black Butte Junior High Gym. The class will focus on flexibility, balance, coordination, relaxation techniques and the importance of healthy nutrition and water intake. Through these classes you will learn ways to improve your overall health and various ways to decrease stress and anxiety.

Thursday’s 10am-11:00am
“Creating Healthy Eating Habits for Kids” will be held in the Wellness Center room 20. This is an interactive nutrition program for parents and children ages 0-5. Parents and children will enjoy this “hands on class” that focuses on developing healthy eating and physical activity habits for life. The program will encompass food safety, healthy portioned meals and snacks, eating patterns, picky eaters, identify food groups, shapes and textures, and resources. There will be games, exercises, music, field trips to local farms, reading time, nutrition education and crafts.

Also on Thursday’s 11:00am-12:00pm there is the “Playgroup and Raising a Reader” program for children ages 0-5 held at the Wellness Center. This class offers fun activities with interactive play and your child will bring home a book bag to share with the family every week!

The ongoing class “These Shoes Were Made for Walking” meets every Friday from 9:00am – 10:00am. Call Kelly for each week’s walking location. Join in on the fun with friends and family, and walk amongst the beautiful trees and fresh air. Class focuses on the benefits of walking to improve flexibility, decrease LDL and blood pressure along with decreasing stress and improving mental and physical health.
