Shingletown Medical Center Vaccine Updates

Vaccines provided at Shingletown Medical Center in California

Shingletown Medical Center is proud to have provided COVID-19 vaccinations since December of 2020.

Our staff has administered nearly 2,000 first and second doses of Moderna vaccine while continuing to care for our patient’s daily needs. We also are pleased that we have not wasted a single dose of vaccine.

In part that is due to our appointment scheduling workflow and also in part thanks to the majority of people who have kept their appointed times. Our vaccine clinics at the SMC Fitness Center are ongoing and available by appointment only.

We are working closely with Shasta County Public Health to help guide the planning process and ensure the vaccine is distributed and administered equitably. We are still accepting phone calls to schedule vaccines, both first and second dose appointments are made at the same time in order to assure we have the appropriate number of doses allocated to SMC.

We are generally able to return calls within 48 hours and schedule appointments within the next week. In some cases we can schedule the same day. We thank those of you who have taken a last minute appointment in order for us to save a dose that would have been wasted.

Our goal is to never waste a dose of vaccine and there is still no cost to you for the vaccine. We again ask that you do everything in your power to keep any appointment you make thus ensuring no doses of vaccine are wasted.

What do we know about the available vaccines?

The Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines are both mRNA vaccines and do not contain any virus parts, preservatives, eggs or latex. This results in absolutely no chance that the vaccine will cause an infection and reduces the risk of allergic reactions. Two doses are required and two weeks after the first dose, you are about 50-80% protected from the COVID-19 virus. That is why it is important to get the second dose. About 1-2 weeks after the second dose, the protection is about 95%. SMC is not offering and has never offered the Johnson & Johnson single dose vaccine. At this time we have no concerns about second dose allocations. We will not administer first doses without assurance that we can provide your second dose.
